Hundreds of thousands of Californians face a second day of controlled power outages in PG&E’s service area. Extreme events, whether they are wildfires, hurricanes or floods affect infrastructure including the electricity grid, and constitute a risk to residents across the US, from California to the Midwest to the coastal communities on the East and Gulf Coasts. Efforts led by transdisciplinary CPIE faculty including Alberto Lamadrid, Paolo Bocchini, Larry Snyder, Brian Davidson, Richard Sause, David Casagrande, Jessecae Marsh, and Dominic Packer amongst others analyze the technical, communal and institutional challenges. This research examines how to make the power grid at transmission and distribution levels, as well as transportation, social and economic networks more resilient, and better prepare and respond to these events, better enabling effective restoration after large scale disruptions.
