Kris Ohleth, from Denmark-based power company Orsted, returned to Lehigh on September 17th to kick off the Energy Systems Engineering Seminar Series with a talk about offshore wind in the U.S. Ohleth is Orsted’s Senior Manager of Stakeholder Engagement and previously visited Lehigh as guest speaker in April. Attendees were briefed on Orsted’s Ocean Wind project, a 1,100 MW project that will establish New Jersey’s first utility scale offshore wind farm. Ohleth also provided insights into Orsted’s end-to-end business model, which places a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement, and the company’s collaborative R&D programs.

Prior to the talk, Ohleth toured several labs within Lehigh’s Institute for Cyber Physical Infrastructure & Energy (I-CPIE). Rudy Shankar, Director of Energy Systems Engineering, Muhannad Suleiman, Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, Tommy Marullo, NHERI IT Systems Administrator, Liang Cao, NHERI Research Scientist, and Chad Kusko, I-CPIE Director of Operations discussed Lehigh’s hybrid testing capabilities during a tour of the Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems (ATLSS) Engineering Research Center. Ohleth also visited Arindam Banerjee’s Turbulent Flow Design lab. Banerjee is an Associated Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics. The lab tours spurred discussions about how Orsted and I-CPIE can explore synergies in I-CPIE’s Large Structural Systems of the Infrastructure, Energy-Water Nexus, and Energy, Power and Resources Technologies research thrusts.
